Elements of News

Elements of News:
Write at least one sentence that explains the meaning of each element of news

timeliness-Its having a story ahead of time. Writing the story in a more projected manner with more details and more information.

proximity-Keeping it real rather than having things out of the normal. Keeping the news from where you are at rather than having news from around the country.

prominence-The most important subject over another. Even though it may seem like the same subject that is being reported, there are certain things that make them different and one is more outcoming than another.

consequence-The bad outcome of a situation.

human interest-What people are mostly interested in.

conflict-The problems that are being faced meanwhile and or after a(n) reportage.

October Star critique, News Judgment

October critique
Look through the October paper again.
1. Write down 3 specific things you like about it and 1 thing you dislike about it.
*pictures were well oriented
*important/fun news was reported
*we all worked together
-there was nothing i really disliked!
2. Write a few sentences about your process in reporting, writing, revising, taking pictures, proofreading, and helping with the production and distribution of the paper.
*It was a fun and interesting experience. Working together, having the opportunity to get to know what it's like to interview someone.
News Judgment
Read pages 58 - 62 in Journalism Today.
Read the 10/16/10 Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times stories on Dwayne Wade.

October Star
How did the adviser's news judgment result in "Homecoming lifts spirits" being the page one article?
*It was the major thing that many people were involved in and we were all wondering what was happening.
Why was it placed above "Freshy Friday didn't break the piggy bank"? Why weren't the other news stories page 1 stories?
*Maybe they were other than school related and they were the first thing on the agenda.
Why was the "Guitar club" story at the top of page 7 and "Ms. Ryan" beneath it?

Dwayne Wade
What details and quotes were included in the Sun-Times article that weren't in the Tribune?

What was the theme or angel of the story?
He was accused of beating his wife, basically domestic violence.

Why didn’t the Tribune put the story on Page 1?
They didnt think it was as interesting as the other.
